This two part exam gives plaque location, echogenicity and carotid lumen reduction. It also gives double - redundant average of the CIMT which is the best single, non-invasive, surrogate endpoint for stroke an Mi prediction.
ECHOCARDIOGRAM
An " echo " evaluates the structure and function of the heart using ultrasound. This test has been the mainstay in the primary evaluation of suspected cardiac disorders for over 20 years.
ABDOMINAL AORTA ULTRASOUND
Three measurements of the abdominal aorta.
Looking for dilated areas (defined > 3cm), also evaluates any plaque or ectatic areas of AA and or aorta aneurysm.
